High in Rwanda’s northwest, where rolling green hills rise into dramatic volcanic peaks, Volcanoes National Park protects one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on Earth — encountering mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

This is not a typical safari. There are no open plains or long game drives. Instead, you walk into misty forests, guided by expert trackers, listening to the sounds of the jungle. Then suddenly, through the bamboo and vines, you see them — a gorilla family resting, feeding, playing.

The Landscape

Volcanoes National Park is part of the greater Virunga Mountain range that stretches across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is defined by:

• Rich volcanic soil creating lush greenery

The scenery feels almost cinematic — shifting clouds, cool mountain air, and layered green hills that seem to go on forever.

Wildlife Highlights

While mountain gorillas are the main reason most travelers visit, the park offers much more biodiversity than many expect.

 Mountain Gorillas

Rwanda protects several habituated gorilla families, each led by a dominant silverback. Treks are carefully managed to ensure conservation and minimize impact. Only one hour is allowed with the gorillas — a rule that protects them but makes the experience even more meaningful.

Watching a young gorilla tumble in play or locking eyes with a calm silverback just meters away is something no photograph can truly capture.

 Golden Monkeys

Bright, playful, and fast-moving, golden monkeys live in the bamboo zones of the park. Their trekking experience is lighter and generally less demanding than gorilla trekking.

 Rare Bird Species

Volcanoes National Park is home to numerous Albertine Rift endemic bird species, making it attractive for bird enthusiasts.

 Dramatic Volcanic Scenery

The park includes several volcanoes, including:

• Mount Karisimbi

• Mount Bisoke

• Mount Muhabura

These peaks create a dramatic backdrop that defines Rwanda’s northern horizon.

Volcanoes National Park is open year-round, but seasons influence trekking conditions.

June – September (Long Dry Season)

• Less muddy trails

December – February (Short Dry Season)

• Good trekking conditions

• Slightly fewer visitors

• Pleasant temperatures

March – May & October – November (Rainy Seasons)

• Lush, green landscapes

• Fewer tourists

• Trails can be slippery and more challenging

Even in rainy months, gorilla trekking continues daily — but proper footwear and preparation are essential.

Difficulty Level

​

Gorilla trekking is considered moderate to challenging, depending on the assigned gorilla family’s location.

• Hiking time: 1 to 4+ hours (sometimes longer)

• Terrain: Steep slopes, dense forest, uneven ground

• Altitude: Around 2,500–3,000 meters above sea level

You do not need to be an athlete, but reasonable fitness is important. Rangers adjust the pace to the group, and trekkers can hire local porters to assist with carrying bags and providing support on steep sections. Hiring a porter is not only helpful — it also supports local livelihoods.

For those wanting a deeper immersion, there is also the option of a Gorilla Habituation Experience (limited and more physically demanding).
